"COVER ILLUSTRATION INFORMATION....IN 1978 JACK DAVIS CREATED A COLOR FRANKENSTEIN WITH FILM REELS ILLUSTRATION FOR THE COVER OF A PROGRAM BOOK TO THE "FANTASY FILM CELEBRITY CON" IN PITTSBURGH THAT I WAS CHAIRMAN OF. THEN IN 1987, I ASKED JACK IF HE COULD ADD SOME ADDITIONAL MONSTERS SO I COULD USE IT ON THE COVER OF MY NEW COLLECTOR'S GUIDE. I SENT HIM BACK THAT ORIGINAL, BUT INSTEAD OF ADDING TO THAT PIECE, JACK CREATED A COMPLETELY NEW PIECE MORE ALONG THE LINES OF THE COVER ART TO CREEPY #1 MAGAZINE WITH ALL THE MONSTERS READING A "MONSTER MAGAZINE!" Art by Jack Davis
What a beaut!
ReplyDeleteNice to see the whole painting! The right side is cut off on the book cover.
ReplyDeleteBesides Wally Wood and Gahan Wilson, I can't think of anyone that exemplifies illustrated horror humor any better than Jack Davis. His line and ink work makes order (and chuckles) out of chaos.
ReplyDeleteHere's an excellent article on Davis' monster art in issue #4 of Monster Kid Online.

Mike,
ReplyDeleteI was at one of the Fantasy Film and Celebrity Con's. It was the year that Buster Crabbe, Kirk Alyn, and Caroline Munro attended. There also was a preview of "Alien" that was shown. What year was that? Was it 1978? I remember it being at the Hilton Hotel in Pittsburgh.
Thanks!
Chaz,
ReplyDeleteThe FFCCon with the Davis "Frank" on the program cover (pic added to post) was held Sept. 15-17, 1978 at the Sheraton-Inn near the Monroeville Mall. The FFCCon held at the Pittsburgh Hilton (with Buster Crabbe) was on August 10-12, 1979. ("Alien" was released in May 1979.)
