FM #253 Final!

Well, here they are! All four covers, including a varient of a varient!
(Someone has a serious problem, here!)

The Kerry Gammill Island of Lost Souls is the subscriber and comic book store cover.

The William Stout Mummy is the comic book store "incentive" cover.

The Charlie Adlard The Dead Walk is the newsstand cover(s).

  1. Those incentive covers suck, not that they aren't beautiful, but just the idea that you'd have to be Jesus to locate one and/or have the money of Bill Gates to get one. Before the Stout Werewolf one was even out, ebay had starting prices of 60 bucks. It makes a fan angry as hell. I don't have a problem paying cover price for one but not 60 or a hundred dollars from some greedy ebay troll. And as much as the Selby cover is nice, I had no idea he cut and pasted it with adobe and just painted over the pictures. When Gogos does a cover, he paints one with his actual hand and a brush, same thing with Cobb, Kelly etc. What would you think of Frazetta if you discovered he did paintings with adobe. Just my opinion. But I know that most people are pissed about the alternate covers

  2. Joe, I have comments set to "Registered Users". It's nice to have a name, even if it's a fake one. :-)

  3. disabledpants66, I feel yer pain! Even at cover price, it's a strain on the bank account to pay for the same mag 4 times (or 3, or even 2)!

As for the Selby cover, it's a hybrid, but I like it. Artists have been "painting" with computers for years, now. Even Gogos painted over a couple of photos! :-)

  4. Agreed, the alt covers are cool, but come on... four different covers is a bit much. Thanks for posting all four, it's nice to at least check 'em out.

DP66- While I prefer the look of actual paint to digital paint, it's important to remember that Photoshop doesn't do the work for the artist. They still have to choose the colors and make the "brush" strokes. If it were as easy as a lot of folks think, we'd all be painting covers for FM :)

  5. It's just not the same. Check out Selbys page, he shows you how he did it, step by step. It's like in the old days when they hand colored photos. I remember Selby's FM 191 Dark Crystal cover. Now that was a great cover. Dont get me wrong I like the Hammer cover but I thought he sat down, sketched it all out on a pad etc. I was just disappointed in how it was done

  6. I wonder if anyone has bought an "insentive" cover at a comic shop, or do all the shop owners pull them out and sell them on ebay?

  7. I have never seen any incentive Stout covers of FM in my life. It's like hes using FM covers as an art gallery for his paintings. I wonder how much the next one is going for, probably over 100.00 My question is, has anyone ever paid cover price for one of those incentives. And do you think this multiple alternate covers could kill FM, that and the 10 page b/w photo spread of the gothic Macy's catalog in the back of FM

I doubt it. Most people will just buy the cover that's available at the place where they buy FM. As for the Capt. Co. items, I'm either not interested, or I can get it cheaper sonewhere else.

  11. I am SO disappointed in the new FM. Bland articles, terrible layouts, way too expensive...why even call it Famous Monsters? These variant covers are not only a rip-off but most of them aren't even any good.
I saw FM 252 in stores yesterday but the only decent cover (the Hammer one) wasn't available. Until FM gets back to basics I for one have definately stopped wasting my money on it.

  12. I agree Mike, I would end up picking up which ever is available. So far, I haven't seen any yet, but I haven't hit up any comic shops.

The Stout Mummy is my fav, but I doubt I'll just walk in anywhere and find an incentive cover on the rack :(

  13. Add me to the list of those that have yet to see an actual alternate or incentive cover with my own two eyes.
I know that the shop that I frequent here in my town doesn't get any in because he only orders a couple of issues of each. Which, I can't blame the owner for as only myself & I believe, one other customer buys them.
Ordering eight just to get one incentive cover into the shop would just be foolish on his part. He'd still be in the hole stuck with six high priced mags he couldn't move even if he was guaranteed a $60 sale for the incentive ( which wouldn't be the case ).

  14. I'd like to know what places are actually getting that many issues of FM that they'll actually have a couple incentive cover issues for sale. It sounds like it's every 8 or 10 issues ordered, but is anyone ordering that many?

  15. I imagine only the bigger city shops would even get any incentive covers. Even then, I doubt they get put out on the racks. If you want one, you're just gonna have to go to ebay!
